We're located in New Hampshire. Icelandic Sheepdogs are still pretty rare, I think there are only about 4,000 of them worldwide. I've attached a picture of our Gletta. Icelandic Sheepdogs come in a variety of colors and short, medium and long coats, and they're 25 - 35 lbs. You're right, maybe we should wait another year...Thanks for the advice,Debbie
First of all welcome!!! With the economy the way it is people are having a hard time feeding their children and keeping their homes, let alone buying pets and taking care of them. I have skipped breeding several of my females right now until things pick up. I believe it will pick up again when the economy picks up. I don't believe I have ever seen this kind of dog. Where are you located?Pat
Debbie <ddur54@hotmail.com> wrotHi -- I'm new to the list and to dog breeding. We breed and raise
Icelandic horses and a couple years ago added a female Icelandic
Sheepdog (AKC-FSS) to the family, thinking we'd breed her after she
turned two. She's scheduled for CERF tests on Feb 14th and then hips,
then we'll be ready. I noticed a few posts here about it getting more
difficult to find homes for puppies recently and it worries me.
A friend has an 'oops' litter of Icelandic Sheepdogs that can't be
registered right away because the parents hadn't completed the
requisite health checks. She's found homes for two of the four pups
at about half the price Icies generally command, but still has two
left. I can't afford to increase the number of dogs we already have
if some of the puppies aren't sold. This is a rare breed and when we
bought our Icie puppies were sold before birth. I definitely wouldn't
breed if she doesn't pass the health tests, so these puppies would be
registered -- what do you think?
Being new to this, I'm sure I'll have tons of questions if we do
decide to breed and look forward to learning on this list!
