Your feeding ration sounds right, but at whelping, I begin to add condensed milk to the ration to increase calcium. NOT BEFORE as this can cause milk fever. My girls actually GAINED weight while nursing, I had to let collars out!

ps. I raise Short legged Jack Russells, and first time mama's, one had 5 puppies, the other had 6, quite a job to raise, and they did wonderfully!

Subject: [P&P] Feeding a pregnant/milking Bitch
Ok another post about supplementing pups made me want to ask, what do you all do for your preg/milking bitches?? Do you up their protein amount? Leave it the same??
Mine I've figured out (cause my little toots seem to always have AT LEAST 5 pups or more) to feed a higher protein good kibble when they are nearing the end of their pg and while nursing pups. I had one instance where one of my girls ended up having to get me to feed the pups and then got smart. LOL I've never had a problem with them making enough milk after going to a at least 30% protein kibble with at least 18% fat.
