Lucy - what an interesting post - I have a friend who has a Lakeland and he has described her and her behaviors which seemed similar to my Bedlingtons - they don't appear to look too much alike but it seems like they are similarly pleasant. Thanks for sharing this history! Carol in Saint Louis/Charles Missouri.

AN INTRODUCTION TO OWNING A LAKELAND TERRIERby Jo-Lynn HeffermanBACKGROUND
The Lakeland Terrier originated in the Lake District of Cumberland, England near the Scottish border in the 1800's. He is related to several terrier breeds and is one of the oldest working terrier breeds still in use today. His diverse ancestors include the now extinct Old English Black and Tan terrier, the early Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Bedlington Terrier and Border Terrier.
For generations, theLakeland has been used in theLake District for the purpose of exterminating the fell foxes which raid the farmer's sheep fold during the lambing season. Whereas most terrier breeds have only to bolt their quarry, or to mark it by baying, themust be able to kill the foxes in their lair. Despite his reputation for courage and tenacity, the Lakeland is a gentle and loving companion. Lakeland
This provides you all with the background on the Lakeland from the U.S. Lakeland Terrier website.
As you can see, they originate not far from the home of the Bedlington Terrier.
The Bedlington figured prominently in its development and was added for fire and tenacity. Ken
Bounden tells me that recent crosses between Bedlingtons and Lakelands have found their way
back into the registration pool in Great Britain.
Lakelands are much like other hard coated Terriers, but tend to be more affectionate and focused, like
their Bedlington cousins. They are a breed that makes your heart smile, constantly. They are active
and reactive, and will run circles in the house. They are extraordinarily healthy and free of genetic
defects and diseases. Their only problems are reproductive, with many bitches having infrequent
seasons and conception failures, and quite a few incomplete males. Many persons seeking companions find them hard to locate, because of this. In addition to Bedlingtons, I have owned
and shown Lakelands, Wires, Smooths and Airedales. I love them all but always like to have a
Lakeland or two with my Bedlingtons.
